Gargoyle or Grotesque? Now that is a good question, one worthy of a pub quiz perhaps because there is a difference. Gargoyles serve as decorative guttering to drain away rain water, whereas a Grotesque is not a functional piece of any church or abbey. It is intended to ward off evil spirits. In this case they adorn the walls of our local St Michaels Abbey here in Farnborough.
