One of my regular haunts currently is Dorney Wetlands, as right now its a hotbed of wildlife activity, if you were to visit it today you will see:
- Golden Plover
- Kestrel (if you hang around long enough)
- Tufted Duck
- and more…
You can see hundreds of Golden Plover at the moment and a huge number of Lapwing. I have seen some other species around such as Stonechat, Egyptian and Greylag Geese. In the past few days, there have been redwing around too. Well worth a visit if you are a keen naturalist!
Farnham Heath is a fantastic place and currently undergoing a massive transformation. Tina and I are members of the RSPB and we recently discovered Farnham Heath and the project being managed by Project Manager, Mike Coates. Tina arranged for her Scout group to attend a day’s volunteering. I busied myself taking photographs of the nature in the area, all for a good reason, to document the changes taking place.
Farnham Heath is currently a pine woodland, that was planted just after the war when the demand for timber was high. Now its going to be restored to its former glory to encourage Heathland species back to nest and breed. Nightjars are already returning as are Dartford Warbler. The task will take a few years to complete but it will be worthwhile in the long run.
A quirky post for today – I love my walking boots, simply for the fact that I travelled over 100 miles to buy them which was by no means intentional (I must add).
My journey from Hampshire to Abergavenny in Wales, took place about 3 years ago and whilst we were there, I needed a new pair of boots. We found a shop, I tried a few pairs on and came away with an excellent pair that cost just over £100. It was the best £100 ever spent, they have been to Italy, France and all over the UK, still waterproof, showing no signs of deterioration and are likely to last me another 5 years!
So there you go, get yourself a great pair of boots and you can explore anywhere!
New images have been added of the Hampshire town, Petersfield. To view them simply go to http://www.nicklewis.net/stock/keywords/petersfield and click on the “simple slideshow” link under any one of the thumbnails to flick through them.
Note the clever friendly URL feature I have now added, you can substitute the word “Petersfield” for any keyword you can think of – try it with hampshire, campania, computer and so on, to see what you can find! 🙂
I have been having fun setting up the new www.nicklewis.net/stock section of the website with the latest version of Pixaria installed and firing on all cylinders. I have added some new galleries, they are Hampshire and Dorset respectively.
If you have any suggestions for these galleries, I’d love to hear from you, just post a comment to this post and we can discuss your ideas more. My aim is to build up some good stock for both counties.
